In 1868, two very large anti-Tokugawa clans called the Choshu clan and the Satsuma clan wanted to overthrow the Tokugawa Shogunate. They were anti-Tokugawa because the shoguns would give taxes to anybody in Shogun Japan. The Choshu and Satsuma Clan succeeded in doing this, that was the end of the shogun era.
